Background of the study
TikTok has rapidly emerged as a popular platform for digital storytelling, where Nigerian users create and share short video narratives that reflect contemporary pragmatic practices. The platform’s innovative format encourages users to experiment with narrative techniques, tone, and context, thereby influencing everyday language use and social interaction (Ikechukwu, 2023). These narratives not only entertain but also serve as vehicles for cultural expression, social critique, and identity formation (Okoro, 2024). Through creative editing, humor, and local dialects, TikTok video narratives have redefined pragmatic conventions by blending traditional storytelling with modern digital aesthetics. This phenomenon reflects the dynamic interplay between technology and communication, where pragmatic cues are reinterpreted to suit the rapid, visual format of TikTok (Eze, 2023). The study explores how digital storytelling on TikTok influences language pragmatics, particularly in terms of speech acts, politeness strategies, and contextual inference. By examining these narratives, the research aims to uncover the transformative effects of digital media on pragmatic practices in Nigeria, offering insights into how social media reshapes cultural communication (Chinwe, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the growing popularity of TikTok in Nigeria, there is a dearth of research on how its video narratives impact pragmatic practices. Existing literature has predominantly focused on textual or static media, leaving the dynamic nature of TikTok underexplored (Adebayo, 2023). The rapid exchange of digital narratives poses challenges to traditional pragmatic frameworks, as users blend humor, sarcasm, and cultural references in ways that defy conventional analysis. This study addresses these gaps by critically evaluating how TikTok narratives contribute to evolving pragmatic practices in Nigeria. The limited understanding of these effects hampers the development of theoretical models that incorporate digital media’s influence on communication strategies (Ibrahim, 2024).
